Mary Jean Kerr, 92, of Tripoli, died Sunday, November 1, 2015, at Community Memorial Hospital in Sumner.
Funeral Services will be held at Faith United Church of Christ in Tripoli on Friday, November 6, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Marilyn J. Sargent officiating. Burial will follow at Faith U.C.C. Cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, November 5, 2015, at Rettig Funeral Home in Tripoli and for one hour preceding services at the church on Friday. Memorials may be given in her name to Faith United Church of Christ in Tripoli.
Mary Jean, daughter of Henry and Emma (Rose) Bickett, was born May 30, 1923, in rural Tama County, Iowa. She received her education in the Hudson Schools, graduating from Hudson High School in 1941. She attended American Institute of Business in Des Moines. Mary Jean worked for John Deere & Co. selling war bonds. On January 30, 1946, she was united in marriage with Robert Kerr at her parent’s home in Hudson. The couple made their home in rural Tripoli. Mary Jean was very active on the farm, helping with the various daily tasks, was the bookkeeper, and was also a secretary for over three years at Potter Siding Creamery. She was a longtime member of Faith United Church of Christ in Tripoli, where she was well known for her angel food cake. Mary Jean was a 4-H leader for many years. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, fishing trips with Robert up to Canada and Minnesota, but most especially enjoyed time with her family.
In addition to her husband, Robert of Tripoli, she is survived by her children, David Kerr of Tripoli, Roger Kerr of Denver, Colorado, Jean (Rick) Miller of Osage, and Janice (Darwin) Gordon of Madrid, Iowa; eleven grandchildren, Karina Kerr, Randal (Holly) Kerr, Kole Kerr, Trent Kerr, Brytnie (Jeremy) Carolan, Kahri Anne Kerr, Derek (Rachel) Kerr, Katie (Andy) Cooper, Cassie (Brad) Howard, Raena Gordon, and Seth (Jennifer) Gordon; eleven great-grandchildren, Braden, McKade, Megan, Dawson, Ian, Lexy, Allie, Eamon, Brennon, Afton, and Kason; and one brother-in-law, James Kerr of Tripoli.
In addition to her parents, Mary Jean was preceded in death by her great-grandson, Hudson; one daughter-in-law, Kathie Kerr; two sisters, Beth and Isabelle; two brothers, Harold and Richard; and six sisters-in-law, Wilma, Margaret, Marian, Virginia, Doris, and Louise.
